Today's Reflection

Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Reflection

Two stories. Susanna is innocent - falsely accused by powerful men who wanted to use her. The assembly believed them because they were elders. God sent Daniel to expose the lie.

The woman in John 8 is guilty. Caught in the act. No defense. The Pharisees drag her before Jesus, stones ready. Jesus writes in the dirt - the only time in the Gospels he writes anything - then says: let the one without sin cast the first stone.

One by one, they leave. Starting with the eldest, who presumably had the most sins to remember.

Then: neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.

In your twenties, you know both sides of this. You've been falsely accused - misrepresented online, judged unfairly, had your motives questioned. And you've been guilty - actually, genuinely wrong about something, caught in something, carrying shame you earned.

God handles both. He vindicates the innocent and shows mercy to the guilty. He doesn't confuse the two. He doesn't pretend the guilty are innocent. He doesn't abandon the innocent to false charges. He holds justice and mercy simultaneously.

The key is the last line: go, and sin no more. Mercy isn't permission. It's a second chance. Jesus doesn't condemn - and he expects change. Both are true. Drop the stone in your hand and pick up the new life he's offering.

“Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side.”

— Psalm 23:4
